Sexual assault survivors win $30.6M in class action lawsuit

In a case that federal Judge Travis R. McDonough called an “incredible resolution,” Johnson City in East Tennessee has agreed to pay more than $30.6 million to sexual assault survivors in a major class action lawsuit accusing its police department of failing for years to properly investigate rape cases.

As part of the class settlement agreement, the city will pay $4.2 million to nearly 400 women and minors who reported sexual assault cases to the Johnson City Police Department between 2018 and 2022. Individual checks will average about $7,500.
